Mendocino Community High School Program Overview

Mendocino Community High School is a school within a Mendocino High School and has 40-50 students and four staff (three instructors and an administrative assistant). MCHS works in conjunction with Mendocino High School to provide students with an alternative school model. MCHS students and staff are part of a close-knit learning community that values creativity, academic rigor, personal growth, and community involvement. Student success at MCHS relies on student initiative and responsibility. The family-like environment fosters positive relationships between and among students and staff. These relationships form the foundation of the community at MCHS.

Mendocino Community High School provides students with a wholistic education that challenges students to expand their boundaries academically and personally. Students are frequently asked to “step outside of their comfort zones” in order to experience new challenges. Experiential education weaves its way through the entire MCHS curriculum.

The MCHS academic focus is in the humanities. Jim Jennings and Derek Hutchinson team-teach the core humanities courses, Modern American History/Literature and Modern World History/Literature. Amanda Gray teaches all levels of Spanish (Spanish 1-AP Spanish). Other academic courses include, Philosophy in Literature, Civics, AP Literature, creative writing, and world geography. Math and science courses are taken at Mendocino High School and/or College of the Redwoods. Students also take advantage of independent and directed to studies to expand their learning opportunities. MCHS students and MHS students take courses at both schools.

MCHS offers students exciting learning opportunities outside of the traditional academic courses. These include: Morning Meeting, Ultimate Frisbee, Outdoor Leadership, Senior Projects, and theatre.
