Through inquiry labs, problem solving, and other activities, students explore the properties of matter and its interactions. This course addresses standards in chemistry as well as the science practices. Students will ask questions, develop and use models, plan and do investigations, analyze data, use math, provide explanations using evidence, and communicate information. Chemistry topics covered include atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, ionic compounds, covalent compounds and VSEPR theory, reaction equations, moles, stoichiometry, states of matter and gases, reaction rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, and oxidation-reduction and electrochemistry.
