Mendocino High School Physical Education combines freshmen and sophomore classes together to form a first and second year P.E. program. Over the course of the two year program the students will participate in a number of activities to fulfill the requirements of the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools. The three overarching standards are as follows:
-
Standard 1 - Students demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
-
Standard 2 - Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies.
-
Standard 3 - Students demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.
1st Year Physical Education:
1st year P.E. is based on the California state standards for physical education. This content “articulates the knowledge, skills, and confidence students need to maintain meaningful physical activity throughout their lifetime”(Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools). The classes will focus on development of basic skills in movement activities and personal fitness, as well as, expand their capabilities for independent learning. Students will be required to complete the physical fitness state test: FITNESSGRAM. If a student's does not pass the FITNESSGRAM they will have to retake P.E. until they are able to pass it.
2nd Year Physical Education:
2nd year P.E. builds upon the content from year one and expands on the ideas of sound decision making to enhance successful participation in movement activities.
Grading Policy
Students will receive daily credit based timely attendance (1 pt.), proper foot wear (1 pt.), and participation (2 pts.), which includes; attitude/citizenship, effort, knowledge and performance. This gives them 4 points a day. There will also be weekly journal entries and one research paper per semester.
Daily points - 85%
Journal - 10%
Research Paper (2) - 5%
Make-up Policy
Any absence other than a school related activity will affect the students grade; therefore any excused absence may be made up. Unexcused absences and suspensions can not be made up. Students may make-up a day of class by dressing in their P.E. clothes and running one mile and completing a worksheet of the teachers choosing in relation to the unit in progress. These days must be made up during the unit in which they occurred and on a day that the student obtained all of their daily points. Only one missed day may be made up at a time. The last week of the unit will be when make ups take place. Tardies to class are unacceptable and cannot be made up.
Medical Excuses/Parent Notes
No credit will be given to a student if they are absent or unable to participate for over half of the grading period. If participating for at least half of the grading period a student credit will be given for the work that is performed. If a student will be absent for longer than a week due to a medical excuse special arrangements must be made with the teacher. Medical notes need to turned in to the teacher at the beginning of the time missed due to injury. Short term medical excuses do not need to be made up. However, depending on the reason alternate assignments may be given.
Parents/Guardians may excuse their student from activities for a total of three days, the note must have the current date as well as the dates the student is to be excused written on it and it must be signed by the parent or guardian. Parent notes are considered excused and therefore must be made-up at a later date (see make-up policy).
Required P.E. Clothing
Safety is our number one concern in P.E. Students will be expected to dress down into P.E. specific clothing every day of class. This includes a Mendocino High School P.E. Shirt, pants or shorts that are zipper, button, and pocket free, and athletic shoes and socks. If students are missing any of the safe appropriate clothing they will lose a point of their daily points earned. If they do not have the appropriate footwear they will be asked to sit out for the day and lose all of their daily points.
Lockers
Lockers are the property of Mendocino Unified school District and are issued to the students as a privilege for the storage of their P.E. clothing and personal belongings while in class. As property of the district lockers can be subject to random search at any time. Any items in the lockers shall be considered to be the property of the student to whom the locker is assigned. Every student in P.E. will be issued a locker. We ask that students do not share lockers. Anything that does not fit in the locker should be taken to class.
